What is EMDR treatment?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a clinically proven, effective treatment for stressor related disorders.

Recommended by the World Health Organization for PTSD , EMDR is also recognized as an effective in treating Depression, Anxiety, Complex PTSD, Phobia, Adjustment Disorder and Panic Disorder.

EMDR works by using repetitive sets of eye movements, similar to those during sleep, to help your brain process distressing experiences. During processing, these memories move from being encoded in the emotional limbic system to the rational cortex, reducing their emotional intensity.

What to expect.

I will begin by taking a thorough history to identify the root causes of your symptoms and the key memories to target during. Unlike traditional talking therapies EMDR does not require that you describe the events in detail.

During sessions, I will guide you though brief recollections of distressing memories while engaging your working memory with sensory tasks. These tasks may involve bilateral eye movements, tapping, bilateral auditory stimulation or simple cognitive tasks.

This process allows your brain to access new sensory information, helping it reprocess and store the traumatic memory in a healthy, more manageable way.

While you may experience some discomfort during the session, the distress typically passes quickly, and the changes are permanent.

EMDR offers several benefits over traditional talk therapy:

  • It is faster and more effective for stressor related disorders

  • Clients experience immediate relief without the need to practice or homework between sessions

  • It can be effective where you have previously done talk therapy but not found its effects to be lasting

If distressing events from your past is affecting your present, EMDR could be the breakthough you need to reclaim your wellbeing.
